Look at the following Arabic words. Some are things, some are actions, and some are just tiny connectors.

He wrote

(An action in the past)

فِي
In

(A tiny connector)

وَلَدٌ

وَ
And

The Rule

In the Arabic language, every single word in the dictionary fits into exactly one of these three buckets. Let's name them!

Noun (Ism)

اِسْم

A word that names a person, place, thing, or idea. It is not an action.

  • Examples from above:
  • بَيْتٌ (A house)
  • وَلَدٌ (A boy)

Verb (Fi'l)

فِعْل

A word that indicates an action tied to time (like the past or future).

  • Examples from above:
  • كَتَبَ (He wrote)
  • خَرَجَ (He exited)

Particle (Harf)

حَرْف

A small connector word that doesn't make complete sense on its own.

  • Examples from above:
  • فِي (In)
  • وَ (And)
