Lesson 9: ▶ Part 1: Pointing (هَذَا) Part 2 Part 3 Dialogue Exercises Vocabulary

Demonstratives: "This is..."

How do we point to something right in front of us? Let's meet the most common demonstrative word in Arabic: Hadha.

The Pointer Word

Use Hadha to point at masculine objects that are close to you. Notice how it creates a full sentence all by itself when attached to an indefinite noun!

هَذَا
Ha-dha
"This is"

Using Hadha

Let's practice pointing to items we already know.

هَذَا بَيْتٌ

This is a house
Hadha baytun

هَذَا مَسْجِدٌ

This is a mosque
Hadha masjidun

هَذَا بَابٌ

This is a door
Hadha baabun

هَذَا كِتَابٌ

This is a book
Hadha kitaabun

هَذَا قَلَمٌ

This is a pen
Hadha qalamun

هَذَا مَكْتَبٌ

This is a desk
Hadha maktabun

Connecting Sentences (And - وَ)

You can easily link two statements together using the Arabic letter "Wa" (وَ), meaning "And".

هَذَا مَسْجِدٌ وَهَذَا بَيْتٌ
This is a mosque and this is a house.

Hadha masjidun WA hadha baytun.
