Standalone Pronouns

Instead of saying "Muhammad is a student", we can simply say "He is a student". In Arabic, these standalone words for I, You, He and She are called Detached Pronouns. They are independent and stand proudly on their own!

1. The Core 5 Pronouns (Singular)

Arabic pronouns are highly organized. They change based on Gender (Masculine/Feminine). Let's meet the 5 Singular pronouns!

1st Person (The Speaker)
I
أَنَا
Ana
Used by both Male & Female
2nd Person (The Listener)
You (M)
أَنْتَ
Anta
Notice the Fatha `َ` on top
You (F)
أَنْتِ
Anti
Notice the Kasra `ِ`
3rd Person (Not Present)
He
هُوَ
Huwa
Also translates to 'It' for masculine objects
She
هِيَ
Hiya
Also translates to 'It' for feminine objects

2. Pronouns as Subjects

Let's build full sentences using a Pronoun + Noun. Notice how the second word (Noun) must match the pronoun in gender!

I am a teacher. (Male speaking)
Ana mu'allimun.
أَنَا مُعَلِّمٌ
I am a teacher. (Female speaking)
Ana mu'allimatun.
أَنَا مُعَلِّمَةٌ
You (masc) are a new student.
Anta taalibun jadeed.
أَنْتَ طَالِبٌ جَدِيدٌ
You (fem) are a new student.
Anti taalibatun jadeedatun.
أَنْتِ طَالِبَةٌ جَدِيدَةٌ
He is a doctor.
Huwa tabeebun.
هُوَ طَبِيبٌ
She is a doctor.
Hiya tabeebatun.
هِيَ طَبِيبَةٌ
He is a new boy.
Huwa waladun jadeed.
هُوَ وَلَدٌ جَدِيدٌ
She is a small girl.
Hiya bintun sagheeratun.
هِيَ بِنْتٌ صَغِيرَةٌ
