Dialogue: Sound plurals (ـُونَ، ـِينَ، ـَاتٌ) in conversation
أَحْمَد
هَؤُلَاءِ مُعَلِّمُونَ جَيِّدُونَ.
These are good teachers.
زَيْنَب
وَالطَّالِبَاتُ فِي الْفَصْلِ. نَحْنُ طَالِبَاتٌ.
And the (female) students are in the classroom. We are students.
أَحْمَد
الْمُعَلِّمُونَ كَتَبُوا عَلَى اللَّوْحِ. وَهُمْ فِي الْمَدْرَسَةِ.
The teachers wrote on the board. And they are in the school.
زَيْنَب
مَعَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَفِي الْمُسْلِمَاتِ خَيْرٌ كَثِيرٌ.
With the believers (m. pl.) and among the Muslim women there is much good.
أَحْمَد
هَؤُلَاءِ طُلَّابٌ جُدُدٌ. وَهَؤُلَاءِ طَالِبَاتٌ جَدِيدَاتٌ.
These are new (m.) students. And these are new (f.) students.
زَيْنَب
نَحْنُ مُعَلِّمُونَ وَهُمْ طُلَّابٌ. الْفَصْلُ كَبِيرٌ.
We are teachers and they are students. The classroom is big.
أَحْمَد
الْمُؤْمِنُونَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ. وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتُ فِي الْمَدْرَسَةِ.
The (male) believers are in the mosque. And the (female) believers are in the school.
زَيْنَب
مِنَ الْمُعَلِّمِينَ وَمَعَ الطَّالِبَاتِ. الطَّالِبَاتُ حَاضِرَاتٌ.
From the teachers (m. pl.) and with the (f.) students. The (f.) students are present.
أَحْمَد
هُمْ كَتَبُوا عَلَى اللَّوْحِ. وَنَحْنُ قَرَأْنَا الْكِتَابَ.
They (m.) wrote on the board. And we read the book.
زَيْنَب
جَمْعُ الْمُذَكَّرِ السَّالِمِ ـُونَ وَـِينَ. وَجَمْعُ الْمُؤَنَّثِ السَّالِمِ ـَاتٌ وَـَاتٍ.
Sound masculine plural ـُونَ and ـِينَ. Sound feminine plural ـَاتٌ and ـَاتٍ.
Grammar Note
Sound masculine plural: ـُونَ (marfūʿ), ـِينَ (majrūr). Sound feminine plural: ـَاتٌ (marfūʿ), ـَاتٍ (majrūr). هُمْ (they m.), نَحْنُ (we).
