Level 2 Grand Finale

المُرَاجَعَةُ النِّهَائِيَّةُ

Congratulations on reaching the end of Level 2 (Book 2)! Before you graduate to Verbs in Level 3, let's review the four most important concepts you've learned.

1. The Idafa (الإِضَافَةُ)

When bringing two nouns together to show possession ("The House of God"), the first word loses Al- and Tanween, and the second word is squeezed into Kasra (Majroor).

بَيْتُ اللَّهِِ
Baytu-llaahi (The House of God)
Mudhaf (Possessed)
  • No "Al-"
  • No Tanween (Ends in single Damma)
Mudhaf Ilayhi (Possessor)
  • Can have "Al-"
  • MUST be Majroor (Ends in Kasra)

2. Pronouns (الضَّمَائِرُ)

Detached pronouns are stand-alone words (I, He, They). Attached pronouns are suffixes glued to nouns to show possession (My, His, Their).

Detached (Subject)
هُوَ مُدَرِّسٌ
Huwa mudarrisun (He is a teacher)
VS
Attached (Possessive)
كِتَابُـهُ
Kitaabuhu (His book)

3. Non-Human Plurals — The Golden Rule

The Golden Rule

"In Arabic grammar, any group of non-human objects or animals is treated exactly the same as ONE SINGLE FEMALE (هِيَ)."

هَذِهِ كُتُبٌ جَدِيدَةٌ
Haadhihi kutubun jadeedatun
These are new books. (Singular feminine agreement)
  • We use the singular female demonstrative (Haadhihi) instead of Haa'ulaa'i.
  • We use a singular female adjective (Jadeedatun) ending in Ta' Marboota.

4. The Majroor Forcers

Nouns normally end in Damma. There are two main things that FORCE a noun down into the Majroor (Kasra) state.

1. Prepositions (حُرُوفُ الجَرِّ)
فِي الْبَيْتِ
fil-bayti (In the house)
Min, Ilaa, 'An, 'Alaa, Fee, Bi, Li
2. Adverbs of Location (ظَرْفُ مَكَانٍ)
تَحْتَ الْمَكْتَبِ
tahtal-maktabi (Under the desk)
Tahta, Fowqa, Amaama, Khalfa

You are ready for Book 3.
